The 2019 Indo-Pakistani Kashmir standoff
Just as the sun will rise in the east, India and Pakistan will fight over Kashmir. The highly fought over region has once again escalated into a border conflict. If we include skirmishes, airstrikes, standoffs and full on wars there have been 10 conflicts in total surrounding Kashmir. The question is then, how do you end up with such a diplomatic powder keg as Kashmir?
To understand the situation, we will have to go no further back than 1947 when the British Raj was partitioned between religious lines into the two states of India and Pakistan. The somewhat autonomous princely states of India could choose themselves what nation they wanted to be a part of. It was logical for the majority muslim state of Kashmir to join Pakistan, but the politics of Kashmir were mostly secular and associated with the Indian national congress. The king was tied in his decision to join Pakistan or India.
