English as a Global Language

Introduction

English is spoken in many countries in the world. And many of the English dialects are called pidgin English. The English language dominates the media all over the world. Most of the films, soaps and criminal series and the lyrics of the songs are in English.

Britain had colonies from India to Canada by 1800. They exported goods over the world with ships. In Europe sugar, tea and coffee became common. Indian traded gold and ivory from Africa with cotton, tea, china, silk and spices in Asia. In the west Indies and America Africans were taken prisoner and sold as slaves. Britain has won and lost an Empire the last 400 years. We could walk from Cape Town to Cairo and not leave the British Territory.

But it wasn’t just because of trading the English language have been spread worldwide. In course of the two world wars the leaderships spread films, radio, television and globalisation passed to the United States. Also because of the English colonies, they had to learn English. Many of the dialects are called pidgin English. The language can vary a lot from Standard English, and have not a formal written version. There is also a language called Creole English, were they have their own fixed spelling and grammar. Both of those language have become a result of colonial expansion, slavery and trade.

The United States is the country with highest population of speaking English. United Kingdom is on 2. place. In addition to those countries, English is used as an international communication. This is called a lingua franca. The language is used by people who have learned English as a foreign language.

English is spoken in many countries. In Norway, we starting to learn English in the first year of school. In the towns, we have a lot of English words all around us. But we don’t think about it because we are used to it. Words like sale, Hair studio and the Body Shop is normal to us. The English language also dominates the media. Films, soaps and crime series and lyrics of the songs we hear is in English. Today we also use a lot of English words in our daily conversation. We use words like “cool”, “party” and “oh my god”. Words like “LOL” and “YOLO” are also words we use to express ourselves. And all this is a part of our daily life today.

Conclusion

English is spoken in many countries all around the world. It is not just because of the colonising all the way from Cape Town to Cairo. It is also because of trading from England, Asia, Africa and India. The people who were living in the colonies had to learn English. Many of the dialects are called pidgin English. We also have lingua franca who were used by people who have learned English as a foreign language.

Today we use English in our daily life. In every Norwegian towns, we can see words who comes from English. Also, most of the films, series and songs are on English. Boys and girls today also use words like “oh my god” to express themselves.
